There is something strange in the space between languages. I’m not sure exactly what it is, but it’s fun to explore. It poses a question and presents a challenge…what am I actually trying to say here?

Translation is a vital skill in so many areas of life, as we explore in this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast.

When I started work on a video about the relationship between sensitivity and creativity for this year’s HSP Gathering in Oulu, Finland, which happened a few days ago as I'm recording this, I didn’t really think about the process of translating it from English into Finnish for the subtitles.

I assumed it would be a straightforward part of the process, which it could have been on one level, given the technology we have at our fingertips these days, where language translation can happen more or less instantly.

But it doesn't take much for meaning to go adrift in the basic translation these tools provide.

I was grateful for human assistance. What Tuula brought to the party was more than just her bilingual skills, but the knowledge and understanding of what I was trying to say beneath and beyond the words.
