In this video, we dismantle the wide-spread lie that highly sensitive people are too sensitive. We explore and discuss the power of language and words, that can be destructive and create bondage or be liberating. We also dive into the fascinating world of the subconscious mind and how subconsciously held beliefs are formed. Remember: Sensitivity equals awareness, but we live in a world where so many people are unaware and act out on their own unconscious stuff.

I read a passage from the international bestseller “The Body Keeps the Score: Mind, brain and body in the transformation of trauma” by psychiatrist Dr. Bessel van der Kolk (2014) who has 30+ years of clinical experience from working with traumatized people in different demographics. It’s a must-read not just for people interested in trauma, but for anyone who wants to dig deep into the human psyche and understand many of the mechanisms that make us who we are.

Some of the takeaways are:
+As soon as we internalize the repeated messaging from our environment that we’re too sensitive, we’ll be at war with ourselves. We cannot stop being sensitive – we’re born with this personality trait!

+Neuroscience has discovered that humans have a dual awareness system: one auto-biographical self that connects experiences across time and assembles them into a coherent story, and one system of moment-to-moment self-awareness. The first is rooted in language and the second, in physical sensations.

+As HSPs, it’s super important that we give priority to our own truth instead of trying to please everyone else by aligning with the mainstream narrative that sensitivity is somehow a flaw. Aligning with that kind of narrative would create a split inside us and lead us down the road of exhaustion, burnout, resentment, and bitterness.

+Childhood and teenage years are our formative years. They set us up for the kind of life experiences we’ll have for the rest of our lives, unless we do our inner work to change both the narrative and our outlook on life. If you’ve been through childhood trauma, you need to give priority to doing your healing work because healing happens in layers. Thus, events from the past that you thought you had worked through can resurface, indicating that a new layer of healing is required.
