Joby Aviation has begun a week-long series of test flights in New York City, marking the city’s first point-to-point air taxi demonstration as the company moves closer to regulatory approval for commercial electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

Air taxi firms are racing to secure approvals and commercialise eVTOL aircraft to meet rising demand for faster and more sustainable urban transport. These aircraft can take off and land vertically, allowing travellers to avoid road congestion on airport transfers and short city trips.

The trials are part of a pilot program announced by the Federal Aviation Administration in September.
A Joby aircraft departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday and landed across the city’s heliport network, including Downtown Skyport and the West 30th Street and East 34th Street heliports in Midtown.

The company said it aims to connect Lower Manhattan and Midtown to JFK in under 10 minutes, compared with trips that can take more than an hour in New York traffic. “You witnessed history today,” said Bonny Simi.
