Sri Lanka has launched a free Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme for citizens of 40 countries, including India, making travel to the island nation cheaper and easier for Indian tourists. Effective from May 25, 2026, Indian passport holders can now obtain a free 30-day double-entry tourist ETA by applying online before departure. The move comes as Sri Lanka seeks to revive tourism and strengthen economic ties after years of political and economic instability. India remains Sri Lanka’s largest tourism source market, with over 531,000 Indian visitors recorded in 2025. The policy aims to attract more spontaneous, budget-conscious international travellers seeking hassle-free holidays.
