US forces operating in the Arabian Sea enforced naval blockade measures by intercepting the Iranian-flagged cargo vessel MV Tuska on April 19. The guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance intercepted the ship as it transited the North Arabian Sea en route to Bandar Abbas in Iran. After the vessel's crew failed to comply with repeated warnings over a six-hour period, American forces directed the evacuation of the engine room. The USS Spruance then disabled the Tuska's propulsion by firing several rounds from its five-inch Mk 45 gun into the engine room. Following this, US Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit boarded the non-compliant vessel, which remains in US custody. American forces acted in a deliberate, professional, and proportional manner to ensure compliance with the blockade. Since the commencement of the naval blockade, US forces have directed twenty-five commercial vessels to turn around or return to Iranian ports. The incident adds pressure on ongoing negotiations amid a fragile ceasefire situation.
