The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has failed to pass a resolution aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which remains virtually shut due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. The resolution, proposed by Bahrain and supported by the United States, received 11 votes in favour but was vetoed by permanent members Russia and China. Pakistan and Colombia abstained from the vote. Bahrain's Foreign Minister, Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani, expressed regret over the rejection, stating that Gulf nations had hoped for international support to secure the vital shipping lane. Analysts suggest the veto demonstrates a strategic alignment between Moscow, Beijing, and Tehran against Western interests. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is described as Iran's primary bargaining lever. Meanwhile, reports indicate the US administration remains firm on its demand to reopen the strait without preconditions, with President Biden reportedly prepared for further action if a deal is not reached by the set deadline.
