Is there an AI chatbot that rises above the rest? Tech journalist Joanna Stern (@joannastern) tells Mo News that different chatbots excel at different tasks.

Stern spent an entire year using AI in almost every facet of her life, from accompanying her to doctor's appointments to generating recipes and workouts. She documents the experience in her new book, "I Am Not a Robot: My Year Using AI to Do (Almost) Everything."

After her yearlong AI immersion, Stern says she prefers ChatGPT for writing and editing, Perplexity for its browser, and Claude for coding and website design — including building her website and organizing a pin promotion for her book.

OpenAI's ChatGPT remains the most popular chatbot in 2026, with 900 million weekly active users as of February. Google said in February its Gemini chatbot surpassed 750 million monthly active users, while businesses spent more on Anthropic's Claude than OpenAI for the first time in April. Downloads of xAI's Grok fell to just over 8 million in April.
