Taiwan's government is handing every citizen NT$10,000 (about $314) — and the reason isn't a crisis this time, it's a boom. President Lai Ching-te's administration says the payout is an "AI dividend," funded by the island's blistering economic growth as global demand for AI chips, servers, and cloud infrastructure surges.
Taiwan's 2026 GDP growth forecast has been raised to over 11% — potentially its fastest pace in nearly four decades — while exports are projected to jump more than 40%. At the center of it all is TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, which holds a near-monopoly on the advanced semiconductors powering companies like Nvidia and Apple.
$314 won't change anyone's life financially. But it's a signal: Taiwan wants its citizens to feel the benefits of the global AI race, not just its tech giants and shareholders.
The payout still needs approval from Taiwan's Legislative Yuan before it's rolled out in 2027.
