South African jazz icon Abdullah Ibrahim dies at 91

South African jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim has died at the age of 91.
His family says he passed away peacefully in Germany following a short
illness.

Ibrahim’s illustrious career spanned more than seven decades, earning
him international acclaim as one of jazz’s most influential figures.
Through his music, he brought the sounds of South Africa to audiences
around the world. His final public performance in SA was at the Cape
Town International Jazz Festival in March. His partner, Dr Marina
Umari, says he remained deeply connected to the country throughout his
life. Ibrahim will be laid to rest in Bavaria, Germany, where he
lived. Family friend Iqbal Survé reflects on the legacy of the jazz
maestro.
