When Ibrahim arrived on the island of Zanzibar in 1989, many people called him “doctor.” Yet there was one small problem—he wasn't actually a medical doctor.
Ibrahim had studied theology and had prepared to become a pastor. However, through years of conducting Stop Smoking programs, helping people overcome alcohol addiction, and living a healthy plant-based lifestyle himself, he had gained extensive knowledge about health and wellness.
God had a special purpose for him.
Zanzibar was a place where Christianity was not widely accepted. Had Ibrahim arrived as a pastor, many doors would have remained closed. But as a health worker, he was welcomed. He understood the culture well because he himself had grown up in the same non-Christian religion practiced by many of the island's residents.
Together with his wife and five children, Ibrahim moved to Zanzibar one year after the opening of the first Seventh-day Adventist clinic on the island. There he joined Dr. Josiah, the clinic's director, in serving the community.
Soon, Ibrahim became known throughout the island for helping people improve their health.
One day, while visiting a hotel, he noticed the receptionist constantly smoking cigarettes.
“I can help you quit,” Ibrahim told him.
He prayed with the man and shared practical steps to overcome tobacco addiction. Before long, the receptionist successfully stopped smoking. Excited about his victory, he began telling everyone about Ibrahim and the help he had received.
Word spread quickly.
At that time, the Adventist church on Zanzibar was very small. Only seven members met together. Among them were Ezekiel and Moses, two believers from mainland
