Anwar Ibrahim Presents Malaysia as a Model of Harmony Amid Global Religious Tensions

At the 3rd International Summit of Religious Leaders 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted Malaysia’s unique experience as a multi-racial and multi-religious nation, presenting it as a model for peaceful coexistence in an increasingly divided world.

Addressing religious leaders, scholars, and youth representatives from around the globe, Anwar said Malaysia's success lies in its ability to balance diversity, constitutional principles, and mutual respect while maintaining strong relations with countries across geopolitical divides.

“Malaysia is a trading nation,” he said. “We have to engage with all countries. We maintain the best of relations with the West and the East.”

The Prime Minister noted that while Islam is the religion of the Federation as enshrined in the Constitution, Malaysia remains a multicultural society where citizens of different ethnicities and faiths live together under a shared commitment to respect, tolerance, and equal protection under the law.

Anwar stressed that every citizen must feel safe, valued, and protected regardless of background. He expressed confidence that Malaysia’s approach to managing diversity can serve as an example for the wider world, particularly at a time when many societies are grappling with polarization and conflict.

The Prime Minister also reflected on the growing global challenges marked by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. In such circumstances, he said, religious leaders have an increasingly important role in guiding communities toward peace and understanding.

However, Anwar delivered a candid message to faith leaders, warning that religion itself is not immune from misuse. While religion should be a source of peace, prosperity, and social cohesion, he noted that it is often politicized and manipulated to incite hostility and division.

He urged religious leaders to acknowledge that throughout history, some of the greatest injustices have been committed in the name of religion. Teachings intended to promote tolerance and justice have at times been distorted to justify violence, discrimination, and conflict.

For Anwar, confronting these realities honestly is essential if religious communities are to remain credible voices for peace. He called on faith leaders to champion dialogue, uphold moral responsibility, and work together to ensure that religion remains a force for unity rather than division.

The summit, themed “Religious Leaders and Youth Empowerment: Advancing Coexistence and Social Harmony,” brought together participants from diverse faith traditions to explore solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges.
