South African jazz legend Abdullah Ibrahim has died at the age of 91 after a short illness in Germany, his family confirmed on June 15, 2026. Born Adolph Johannes Brand in Cape Town in 1934, he became one of the most influential figures in jazz history, blending African musical traditions with American jazz to create a sound that resonated around the world.

Known early in his career as “Dollar Brand,” Ibrahim began performing as a teenager and went on to release more than 70 albums across a career spanning over seven decades. In the 1960s, he left apartheid-era South Africa and found international recognition after being introduced to jazz icon Duke Ellington, who helped launch his global career.

Ibrahim’s 1974 masterpiece, Mannenberg, became an anthem of resistance against apartheid and remains one of the most important pieces in South African music history. His work was closely associated with the struggle for freedom and equality, and he later performed at the inauguration of Nelson Mandela in 1994.

In a statement, his partner Dr. Marina Umari said: “Abdullah passed away peacefully with South Africa and its people in his heart. His love for his country never wavered, no matter where in the world he found himself.”

His final album, 3, was released in 2024, bringing to a close a remarkable recording career that spanned more than seven decades. Through his groundbreaking compositions, masterful piano performances, and unwavering commitment to artistic expression, Abdullah Ibrahim helped shape the global jazz landscape while giving voice to the experiences and aspirations of South Africans during some of the nation’s most challenging years.

Abdullah Ibrahim’s legacy extends far beyond music. He will be remembered as a visionary composer, cultural ambassador, and pioneering artist whose work transcended borders, inspired generations, and left an enduring mark on the world of jazz. His contributions to music and society will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.

He is survived by his family, friends, and countless admirers around the world who were touched by his artistry, wisdom, and dedication to his craft. While the world has lost one of its greatest musical voices, his timeless recordings and enduring influence ensure that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. #AbdullahIbrahim #RIPAbdullahIbrahim #JazzLegend #SouthAfricanJazz #JazzMusic #Mannenberg #DollarBrand #JazzPiano #JazzPianist #MusicNews #JazzHistory #AfricanJazz #LegendaryMusician #JazzComposer #SouthAfrica #RIP #MusicTribute #RememberingAbdullahIbrahim #WorldMusic #JazzCommunity #Musician #PianoLegend #JazzFans #MusicLegacy #RestInPeaceAbdullahIbrahim #CulturalIcon #JazzGreat #BreakingNews #Tribute #MusicIndustry
