Nigeria's newly appointed Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has declared President Bola Tinubu's determination to address the long-standing grievances fueling insecurity within Nigeria and across the region.

The appointment ends a 31-month diplomatic void. Nigeria went without a substantive Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN for approximately two years and seven months after President Tinubu recalled all career and non-career ambassadors in September 2023.

The vacancy lasted until April 20, 2026, when Ibrahim formally presented his Letter of Credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres at UN headquarters in New York.

Speaking after the ceremony, Ibrahim said Tinubu's administration is committed to resolving religious conflicts and other crises rooted in historical grievances. "The resolution of these grievances is critical to strengthening peace and safety for everyone," he stated.

The ambassador reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to multilateral cooperation, particularly on security challenges in the Sahel and West Africa. He also advocated for a permanent African seat on the UN Security Council, calling it a historic step toward global collective security.

Secretary-General Guterres recognised Nigeria's importance in strengthening multilateralism, while Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed welcomed Ibrahim's appointment, noting Nigeria's absence had been keenly felt.

The ambassador was accompanied by key diplomats and military officials, signalling Nigeria's renewed engagement with the international community.
