Cortez Masto Opens With ONE Question — "Is It Illegal To Put A Living Person On Currency?" — Bessent Said Yes. Then It Got Worse.
One law. One mock-up. One Treasury official who said he spoke to Trump about it — before Congress passed anything.
During a Senate Finance Committee hearing, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) confronted Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent with a report that US Treasurer Brandon Beach and his senior advisor Mike Brown had been repeatedly urging Bureau of Engraving and Printing staff to prepare prototypes of a $250 bill featuring President Trump's face — in August and September, providing mock-up designs, including one with Trump's face in the center and both the President's and Bessent's signatures.
The law Cortez Masto cited first:
Federal law prohibits the image of a living person from appearing on US currency — including the President.
Bessent confirmed: "That is correct, Senator."
💣 THE EXCHANGE THAT DEFINED THE HEARING:
Cortez Masto: "So, you're acting before legislation has even passed to authorize it?"
Bessent: "Just as we did with the Working Families Tax Cut, we were prepared in advance. At Treasury, we do things in advance."
Cortez Masto: "If the law does not pass, do you intend to still move forward without authorization from Congress?"
Bessent: "Of course not. We will follow the law."
🔴 THE SECOND FRONT — IRS COMMISSIONER CONFUSION:
Cortez Masto then moved to the IRS — and spent several minutes trying to get Bessent to define his own role.
"You are the acting IRS commissioner, correct?"
"That is incorrect."
"What is your position with the IRS?"
"My term expired."
"So you have no position whatsoever?"
"The IRS reports to Treasury. When there is no commissioner, those duties float up to me."
"So you're acting commissioner."
"No, that's incorrect."
Four rounds later — Bessent finally confirmed: "I am performing the duties of the commissioner."
🚨 THE 400,000 TAXPAYERS QUESTION:
Cortez Masto: "You said 400,000 taxpayers' information was also leaked by IRS contractor Littlejohn. They are NOT part of the Trump litigation. Do you intend to give them the same immunity you gave Trump and his family?"
Bessent: "I am unable to provide details due to litigation."
Cortez Masto: "Those 400,000 taxpayers are NOT part of that litigation. That's not an excuse — it's outrageous on behalf of the American public."
No direct answer given.
And the budget deficit: Bessent said at confirmation he'd get the deficit to 3% of GDP by end of Trump's term. The administration's own budget now projects 5% by 2029. His answer: "I said something with a three in front of it."
