India’s 7.8% GDP Growth: Why The Base Year Change Has Sparked Debate

India’s 7.8% GDP growth has triggered a political controversy, with opposition leaders questioning whether changes in the GDP base year affected the latest growth figure. The Finance Ministry and MOSPI have now clarified the methodology behind the revised numbers. Business Today’s Sakshi Batra explains that the earlier GDP estimate of ₹86.05 lakh crore was based on the old 2012-13 series, while the updated methodology uses the 2022-23 base year. The revision brought the previous year’s figure to around ₹80 lakh crore, creating a different comparison. The government says the change reflects updated data and methodology, not an attempt to manipulate the base.
