She Screamed at Her Factory Boss. Then Sold Out.

"I lost everything up there when I was hiking. The monk said: Congratulations." - Denise Wu, rootique
Denise started at Ogilvy in Hong Kong, launched Foodpanda as the first employee, scaled a bike-sharing startup to the US in three months, and then quit everything to build a hardware device for hair loss treatment. Alone. No co-founder, no R&D background, no investors. She spent her own 300,000 RMB on the first mold, went to factories every day from 9 to 8, and flew back from New York to Shenzhen just to scream at a factory boss before Chinese New Year.
The result: rootique DUO, the world's first micro-misting scalp care device. 15 seconds, 3.5x better absorption, now on sale in the US and Canada.
What we cover:
- The photo in Annecy, France that made her refuse to take pictures ever again
- From Ogilvy to Foodpanda to bike-sharing to hair loss hardware
- Why 90% of people quit hair treatment before seeing results
- Building the world's first micro-misting scalp device (15 seconds vs. messy dripping)
- Spending 300,000 RMB of her own money on the first mold
- A marketing expert learning hardware R&D from scratch in Shenzhen factories
- Why Chinese factories are good at copying but refuse to innovate
- Flying from NYC to Shenzhen to storm into the factory boss's office before CNY
- Good cop, bad cop: being a female founder in male-dominated hardware
- InnoX: the Shenzhen incubator with DJI, Huawei and Anker mentors
- Professor Lee (first DJI investor) and how InnoX selects startups
- Pricing a product with no benchmark ($149, based on customer surveys)
- The AI version coming next and a 5-year roadmap with 3 product lines
- Hitchhiking from Yunnan to Tibet, a car accident, and a monk's lesson
